Full List of SHA-Approved Hospitals in Kitui County

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has approved a list of public and private hospitals in Kitui County that residents can now use for covered treatment. The Kenya Times reports that the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has licensed facilities spanning Kitui Town, Mwingi, Mutomo, Ikutha, Migwani and Nguni that now sit on the SHA registry.
For a county where many families still travel long distances for specialist care, knowing exactly which clinic or hospital will accept SHA cover matters as much as the treatment itself.
Public Facilities Approved
At the top of the public list sits Kitui County Referral Hospital, listed alongside Border Police Hospital as a level 4 public facility under the SHA framework, according to the outlet’s reporting. Kyondoni Dispensary also made the cut, accredited as a level 2 public facility serving a smaller catchment area.
Together these public facilities cover a wide range of care. Per the report, they handle outpatient and inpatient treatment, maternal healthcare, diagnostics, immunisation, emergency care and referrals to bigger hospitals when a case needs more advanced attention.
Private Hospitals On The List
Private providers make up a large share of the approved facilities too. Jordan Hospital stands out among the accredited private options, the report notes, alongside a cluster of level 4 hospitals that include The Kitui Hospital, Neema Hospital Ltd, Dosage Medical Center, Mwingi Specialist Hospital, Neema Hospital Ltd Annex, Doctors Centre-Kitui and Mwingi Medicare Center Ltd.
A smaller group of specialised level 4B facilities also appears on the registry. City Gate Doctors Plaza Ltd and Machakos Imaging Center Ltd-Mwingi fall into this category, offering more targeted diagnostic and specialist services than a standard general hospital would.
What This Means For Patients
SHA took over from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in 2024 as Kenya’s main health cover scheme, so the shift has meant residents needed a fresh list of where their registration actually works. For a Kitui Town trader or a Mwingi farmer budgeting for a hospital visit, that list is the difference between a covered bill and an unexpected one.
Health sector reporting on SHA accreditation more broadly cautions that facility lists can shift, so patients are generally advised to confirm a hospital’s current SHA status directly before turning up for treatment, rather than assuming an older list still applies. That advice holds just as much in Kitui as anywhere else, given how often smaller clinics move in and out of accreditation.
The county’s health infrastructure has also been getting fresh state attention. President William Ruto pledged Ksh 200 million toward a new level 4 hospital in Mutito, to be named after the late Nzamba Kitonga, during a meeting with Kitui Governor Julius Malombe at State Lodge Kitui, according to a report carried by AllAfrica. Ruto said the national government was working with county administrations to strengthen how universal healthcare and social health insurance reach residents.
That Mutito project, once built, would give the Kitui South area a level 4 facility of its own rather than relying on referrals to Kitui Town or Mwingi. Whether it gets built to the timeline the President described, and whether it too ends up on the next SHA accreditation list, is something residents in Mutito will be watching closely.
