Kitui Football: Governor’s Cup, Schools and Scouting

Kitui football runs from village pitches to a county cup final. The Kenya News Agency reported that 684 teams entered the first Kitui Governor’s Cup at village level, and 16 reached the finals. This guide covers that cup, school competitions and county scouting, and explains how a young player can get started.

The Governor’s Cup in Kitui football

The finals were set for 21 to 23 August 2026 at Ithookwe Stadium. Village-level games began in February 2026. In addition, the 16 finalists were eight men’s and eight women’s teams. The men’s winner was to receive Sh500,000, and the women’s winner Sh300,000.

The county government and its department for culture, gender, youth, ICT, sports and social services ran the event. The finals also included music, dance and digital skills contests, so the event was wider than football. As at present, no published results name the winners. Check the county sports office for the final scores.

School football in Kitui

Schools are a main feeder for Kitui football, because they bring many young players together. Education News reported a Term Two championship of the secondary schools sports association, at Mwingi Boys High School from 1 to 4 July. Sixteen schools took part after winning sub-county rounds.

The games included football, volleyball, basketball, rugby and netball. The report names St Charles Lwanga, Migwani Boys, Mutito Boys, Katulani Boys and Nguni Boys as schools to watch. Organisers called it a platform for finding young talent. The article does not give the year, so confirm the date before you plan around it.

Scouting and county sides in Kitui football

According to the Nation, county coaches were sent across Kitui to scout players, in a tournament that started at grassroots level and ended in a county final. The aim was to build a county team for the Football Kenya Federation Division Two, with full county sponsorship. The report carries no date, so ask the county sports office about current plans.

The same report adds that Mwingi Junior Stars had won the Eastern region of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom tournament, which carried a team prize of Sh200,000. Later results are not available in public sources.

Women’s football in Kitui

Half of the cup finalists were women’s teams. That is a good sign for the girls’ game in the county. Moreover, the women’s winner was to receive Sh300,000, which is smaller than the men’s prize. The report does not explain the difference. Girls who want to play can start with school teams and ward sides, and families can support them with transport and kit.

Why a stadium matters for Kitui football

A good pitch changes the game. The new stadium plan included a standard football pitch and an athletics track. Local teams can now play in a proper venue, and scouts can also see them there. The benefit depends on fair access and care of the pitch, so the county will need clear booking rules.

Clubs, leagues and fixtures in Kitui football

As at present, no public league table, club list or county football association contact is available. Still, players who want organised football can start with ward teams and school sides. Sub-county trials lead to county squads, and national leagues scout from those squads.

How to get started in Kitui football

First, join a village or ward team, because the cup began at that level. Ask your school sports teacher about sub-county trials. Sub-county trials are the usual route into county squads, so turn up early and bring your school letter and boots. Keep a record of games and goals, since scouts ask for them. A short video of a match, taken with permission, can also help. Train regularly, and look after your health and studies.

Meanwhile, parents and coaches can ask the county sports office about registration and fixtures. A written confirmation of each fixture helps teams avoid travelling for a cancelled match. Make sure young players have safe equipment and supervision. Insist on water breaks in the heat, and on first aid at the pitch.
