Homa Bay Violence Leaves Two Dead as Opposition Rally Turns Chaotic

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement saw its Homa Bay County tour collapse into deadly chaos on Sunday, August 16, 2026, leaving two people dead and 46 others injured. The Star reports that the dead included a police driver and a Ugandan woman caught up in the confrontation.

The tour brought together Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who had planned to sell their 2027 political message in Homa Bay, long regarded as an ODM stronghold in Nyanza. Trouble had actually started the night before. Kahawatungu’s coverage notes that youths dressed in clothing linked to ODM attacked and looted the Homa Bay Tourist Hotel on Saturday evening, smashing windows and making off with property before police arrived. By Sunday morning, hired goons were blocking major roads with boulders and cut branches, with witnesses reporting no visible police presence as early as 6am.

Journalists covering the rally were not spared. Reports note that K24, Standard and AFP journalists were assaulted, with equipment, press cards and other belongings stolen from at least two K24 reporters. Accounts of the property damage vary between outlets – Kahawatungu counted at least one torched vehicle and 17 arrests, while the Nation put the number of vehicles set alight along the Homa Bay-Rongo road at up to six – a discrepancy that has not yet been resolved by police.

Ruth Odinga Sounds Alarm

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga was among the first prominent voices to speak out, arguing that political leaders themselves carry blame for the culture of intolerance behind such rallies turning violent. She said, “We are rattling pretty fast towards a dark abyss, and when we get there, getting out of it will be a different story.”

Odinga singled out the assault on journalists as especially troubling, warning that attacking the press amounts to attacking every Kenyan’s right to information. She also invoked the legacy of her late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, saying the violence betrays the democracy earlier generations fought to build.

Gachagua And Kalonzo React

The reaction quickly took on a national political dimension. Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua accused President William Ruto’s administration of being behind the violence, while Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, commenting on the Homa Bay chaos, called the scenes undemocratic. Citing NTV Kenya’s coverage, the pair used the moment to renew the United Opposition’s argument that Smartmatic can no longer be trusted to run Kenya’s elections, alongside their call for the 2027 vote to be free and fair.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission also weighed in, with chairman Bishop Kefa Nyamweya describing the incidents as unfortunate and warning they represent a trend that runs against both the Constitution and the National Cohesion and Integration Act, per Kenyans.co.ke’s report.

Accusations Meet Silence

Opposition figures have gone further, accusing Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma of ordering the attacks, pointing to a viral video some interpreted as Kaluma directing residents to block the rally and target hotels housing Sifuna’s team. Kaluma and Wanga have not publicly responded to those specific claims in the material reviewed for this article, so the allegation should be read as the opposition’s version of events rather than an established fact.

Notably, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who hails from the area, had assured the public beforehand that the rally would be secure. By Sunday evening, however, no official comment had come from Wanga, the police, or Omollo addressing what actually went wrong on the ground.

Linda Mwananchi itself issued a statement afterwards describing the tour as an ambush, alleging a coordinated operation that it said involved people acting alongside police officers and suspected state security operatives. The movement did credit some Nyandiwa and Sindo-based officers for refusing to take part in disrupting its rallies, a detail that complicates any blanket claim about the police response.

With 17 suspects already in custody and investigations still open, the real test now is whether anyone named in these competing accusations – Kaluma, Wanga, or unnamed security officers – is ever formally summoned or charged, something Nyamweya’s commission and opposition leaders alike say they will be watching closely as Kenya heads toward the 2027 general election.
